Most of the liquid crystals to be synthesized required the preparation of intermediate. Generally, producing a liquid crystal from an intermediate can save you time and money. Intermediates tend to be extremely reactive and short-lived, so they represent a low concentration in a chemical reaction compared with the amount of reactants or products. When describing intermediates, we need to take into account the reaction in which they are present. A short-lived species in one reaction might actually be considered stable in another.
Generally, there are three main steps in the manufacturing process of liquid crystal materials. Firstly, liquid crystal intermediates are synthesized from basic chemical raw materials. The second step is the synthesis of liquid crystal monomer from liquid crystal intermediates. In the third step, these electronic liquid crystal monomers are mixed in different proportions to achieve uniform and stable liquid crystal morphology to form mixed liquid crystal. The liquid crystal mixtures are assembled with other related materials to become liquid crystal display (LCD) panels.
Liquid crystal intermediate plays an important role in the preparation of liquid crystal materials. The common liquid crystal intermediates mainly include phenol type, ketone type, halogen type, boric acid type, acid type, biphenyl type, benzonitrile type, etc.

With the development of liquid crystal display panels and the miniaturization of electrical and electronic components, the research of liquid crystal materials has been a latest research hot spot. As the basis of liquid crystal materials, the demand for liquid crystal intermediates is projected to boost. Here are some examples of liquid crystal intermediates.
3,4,5-trifluoromethyl phenol is a kind of important liquid crystal intermediates, mainly for the production of the 4th generation TFT color liquid crystal material.
Different types of 3,6-disubstituted cyclohex-2-en-1-ones are very useful intermediates for synthesis of various known liquid crystals as well as new ones, especially those which contain lateral substituents in cyclohexane, cyclohexene, or benzene rings[1].
4-alkoxypyridines 1[n] (n≥3) is a kind of intermediate for soft materials such as liquid crystals (including polar, ionic and quadrupolar species, such as 2[n])[2].
