Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC)

What is Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC)?

Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) refers to a composite system where liquid crystal microdroplets are uniformly dispersed in a transparent polymer matrix. By applying an electric field, the liquid crystal molecules realign, switching the material from a scattering opaque state to a transparent state. The control of this reversible optical effect has led to the use of PDLC as an important material for smart glass, light control devices, and adaptive optics.

PDLC is an emerging light management technology that provides controllable transparency without the need for mechanical shading elements. Our PDLC product portfolio includes customized solutions for privacy glass, optical modulation, and advanced photonics applications.

Key Features of PDLC Materials

  • Electro-Optical Switching: Rapid transition between transparent and opaque states.
  • High Optical Contrast: Excellent clarity in the on-state and strong light scattering in the off-state.
  • Customizable Formulations: Tunable droplet size, refractive index, and polymer cross-linking for specific performance needs.
  • Durability and Stability: Resistant to UV exposure and thermal stress, ensuring long-term performance.
  • Scalable Processing: Compatible with film coating, lamination, and large-area manufacturing techniques.
